'Rangitahi / Transient' (Three Pebble Stack)
Artist statement for this series:
"If you've ever stood on top of a mountain, paused on a windswept beach, or sat quietly under a forest canopy, you may know what it's like to feel at one with the life and elements that surround us.
I aim to capture a little of the sense that you get when, escaping from distractions, you connect with yourself and your surroundings in a meaningful way.
I want the self-contained forms in this series to hold the viewer gently, perhaps triggering a primitive biological response: What does it feel like to be touched gently? To join with another? To merge together, or to balance each other; to deflect, or to yield?
The forms communicate something about how the internal experience relates to the external. They ground us and hold us, without conflict or judgement. There is a little tension, but it is quietly and harmoniously held in balance. It is like they are saying: "Hold on to your uneasy disquiet. Let it settle. Then see what comes."

I'm looking for forms and interactions that create a kind of visual resonant frequency. Starting with organic and natural shapes and textures, I layer up the paint, one element or colour at a time. I use my instinct a lot, and allow the work to create it's own language. Sometimes I work slowly, other times more quickly, depending on the way the work 'speaks' to me. It's important to me that each brushstroke, each artistic action is purposeful and considered, even when the addition of a textural element contains an degree of unpredictability. It's about finding a sweet spot between pure instinct and restrained discipline. In that regard it has, for me, some similarities to a martial arts or Zen practice."
